Fatigue Cracking in Rails

August 25, 2017

Dr. David Allen and Dr. Pete Keating have recently initiated an externally funded project that focuses on experimental observation of fatigue cracking in rails.  In this project sections of rail that have previously been in service on heavy haul lines are subjected to both axial and transverse cyclic loading up to 600,000 cycles.  During the testing the rails are periodically inspected using phased array ultrasonic transducers as a tool for determining the long term growth of cracks in rails.  It is hoped that these tests will provide information critical to the development of rail fatigue models currently under development under other projects

CRR visits Axion Structural Innovations Plant in Waco, Texas

May 15, 2017

Director, Dr. David Allen visits Axion Structural Innovations Plant in Waco, Texas in Late April. Axion specializes in composite Railroad Ties. These composite railroad Ties are of the highest quality, made using our patented formula – an industrial grade, Recycled Structural Composite (RSC). They are virtually impervious to the elements; will not rust, splinter, crumble, rot, absorb moisture or leach toxic chemicals into the environment; and are completely impervious to infestation by insects. Axion also has Structure Mats, Structure Supports, and Structure Boardwalks in production.
